5th GRADE BEGINNERS
Dear DeRuyter Central School 4th Grade Parents, This is a very exciting time! Your child will have the opportunity in 5th Grade to participate in the DCS Instrumental Music program, taking lessons and playing in Band. I am asking for permission slips now as to get a jump-start for when we return to school in September. In the 4th Grade Music Classes, I have explained and demonstrated the different instruments the students may choose from. When we return to school in the fall, I will meet individually with each student who returned a permission slip to make a final determination of the instrument that they are best suited for. If you have an instrument at home that your child will play, you are all set OR you may acquire one on your own. If you need help finding an instrument, I can provide you with information. Some words of advice: please do not purchase an instrument from BJ’s or Sears or JC Penney. If you are looking on E-Bay, please look for the following brand names: Vito, Bundy, Yamaha, King, Conn, Selmer, Geimeinhart or call me if you are unsure. Please talk about this awesome opportunity with your child, help them make their instrument choices and return the attached permission slip to your child’s classroom teacher by Monday, June 21, 2010. 6-12th GRADE BAND
1 Year - 1/2 Credit: 6-12 Concert Band is open to all 6-12 graders upon the approval of the band director. Students play a variety of band literature including classical to popular songs. The main emphasis of the band is preparing and perfecting literature for understanding and performance. Aspects of learning include instrumental technique, tone quality, intonation, phrasing, sight-reading, and an understanding of the music. Band members are scheduled for a weekly small group lesson, which is required attendance. Band students are required to attend every band rehearsal and every scheduled music department event to include concerts and special performances.
